West Des Moines, IA (February 26, 2013) –Hubbell Homes announced today that passive radon mitigation systems will now be standard in all new homes.  Radon, a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in the earth, is a leading cause of lung cancer, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Currently, buyers are made aware of the possibility of high radon levels in a home, but testing or mitigation is not required by the seller.  Hubbell Homes will install the passive system during construction and test the home before closing.  If the home tests high, radon mitigation will be completed at no additional cost to the buyer.

“Over half of Iowa homes test above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L, so installing Radon Resistant New Construction (RRNC) features in all new homes just makes sense, from both a healthy home perspective and an economical perspective,” stated Rick Welke, Radon Program Manager at the Iowa Department of Public Health.  “All homes should be tested for radon before occupancy, including those with RRNC features to make sure radon is not elevated.  Installing a passive system makes reducing radon much simpler and more aesthetically pleasing than if it has to be done after the home is built.”

“We felt this was something we needed to get in front of, as a leader in our industry,” said Hubbell Homes President and CEO, Rick Tollakson.  “It means a lot to us to provide homebuyers with that sense of security, a feeling that will last long after closing paperwork has been signed.  We’re proud to include passive radon mitigation systems as part of the Hubbell Difference, an added benefit for healthy, happy homes.”

Brennan Buckley, Sr. Vice President of Iowa Realty, agreed the passive system will provide additional value to homeowners, stating, “Consumers today are more aware than ever about the risks of radon in the home.  Hubbell Homes being proactive in removing those risks will give buyers some valuable peace-of-mind.”
The EPA states that radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.  Most radon-induced lung cancers occur from low and medium dose exposures in the home.  Hubbell Homes built in March 2013 and after will have the passive mitigation system included and any home that tests over the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L will be mitigated.
