Johnny’s Hall of Fame Sold to Hubbell Realty Company
DES MOINES, Iowa (May 1, 2006) – Hubbell Realty Company announced today its purchase of Johnny’s Hall of Fame, a staple in the downtown Des Moines bar scene for the past 44 years. Hubbell is developing 51 residential apartments above Johnny’s as part of a $31 million residential and entertainment development on Court Avenue. Hubbell completed the purchase today from Fran and John Ulrich, which includes the property and all memorabilia. Loyal patrons of Johnny’s will be able to enjoy the same drink specials and food they have come to love, as management and operations will remain unchanged. “The purchase of Johnny’s Hall of Fame fits into the overall picture we have for Court Avenue, which is developing quality housing coupled with great entertainment options, ” states President and CEO of Hubbell Realty Company Rick Tollakson. “Through our golf courses, we have already ventured into the entertainment and leisure services arena. Continuing the downtown tradition of Johnny’s is a natural fit.” Ulrich first opened Johnny’s in 1962 as the key club Johnny’s Interlude Lounge located at 219 4th Street. By 1972, he added “Hall of Fame” to the name with 4,400 pictures from members of nearly every sport’s Hall of Fame. The collection, which included documentation and photographs since 1772, were all but destroyed in a 1989 fire at its current location. “The time was right for us to sell,” states Ulrich. “We’ve had a great 44 years in the business and have made a lot of lifetime friends. This was the right time and opportunity for us. Hubbell is committed to seeing downtown thrive, which has always been our vision for the area.” Johnny’s will remain open during construction of the Spaghetti Works Apartments.
