Construction Begins on Hubbell Tower Apartments in Historic Hubbell Building
Des Moines, Iowa (April 28, 2005) Hubbell Realty Company swung into action today for construction on the Hubbell Tower Apartments in the historic Hubbell Building located at 904 Walnut in Downtown Des Moines. Jim Hubbell, III, Chairman of Hubbell Realty Company and Rick Tollakson, President and CEO, donning hardhats and sledgehammers knocked down a conference room wall on the 9th floor, the former offices of Hubbell Realty Company. Floors 2-10 (excluding the Skywalk area) of the Hubbell Building will be renovated into a 73-unit affordable housing project with the street level remaining as commercial space. The one and two-bedroom apartments will range in size from 600 – 750 square feet. Amenities will include a fitness facility, computer center, on-site laundry and skywalk access. Demolition is scheduled to be complete in six weeks, with interior renovation continuing through February of 2006. Metro Wrecking, the subcontractor completing the demolition, is utilizing techniques in recycling for the project. A majority of materials are either being recycled or reused for materials such as wood mulch, paper, and numerous other products. According to Chris Pagliai of Metro Wrecking, all the materials will be sent to a recycling center where 95% of that material will be reused in other products. The Hubbell Building, first constructed in 1913, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in November of 2004. The renovation will conform to the Secretary of the Interior’s standards to preserve the historic design of the building. The designation on the National Register of Historic Places affords additional tax credits towards the renovation of the Hubbell Building. Keith Denner, owner of Sun Prairie Apartments, will serve as property manager.
