Easter Seals Corporate Regatta to Launch From Lake Cheerio
DES MOINES, IA (July 24, 2006) The third annual Easter Seals Corporate Regatta will launch off the shores of Lake Cheerio at Camp Sunnyside at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, July 27. More than 25 corporate teams will participate in the fundraising Regatta, a paddle-boat race expected to raise $50,000 to help kids with disabilities attend Camp Sunnyside this summer. The event is free and open to the public. The race will begin with the christening of the paddle boats by Honorary Admirals Governor Bob Ray and wife Billie and Event Captain Rick Tollakson of Hubbell Realty Company. The Regatta will involve eight “heats” competing for the “Regatta Cup”, a trophy to be presented to the grand champion of the event. Competition is expected to be fierce as the teams go up against each other in the “military and media heat”, and Burnett Realty defends its 2005 Regatta Cup victory. Boats will be loaded with supersoakers and other shore-side antics to add to the excitement of the event. Camp Sunnyside campers will be joined by employees from participating companies in fierce competition for the “Sunnyside Spirit” trophy to be awarded to the team with the best cheering section. Bankers Trust, Gillotti Companies, and Valley Bank are expected to pull out all stops to take home this coveted trophy while campers from Camp Sunnyside have organized special cheers for the event. Local talent Mary Day will act as race announcer, while Al Ford and the All-Star Dixieland Band will provide live entertainment. Major sponsors of the event are: Marsh and Hubbell Realty Company. “The Regatta provides a wonderful opportunity to support Camp Sunnyside in addition to enjoying a little friendly competition among colleagues,” states Tollakson. “If we reach goal, we will be helping 165 kids with disabilities attend a very memorable weeklong camp. There aren’t many events where the children you’re trying to help are right there beside you, cheering you on.” Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside is the only camp in Central Iowa designed, built, and staffed to meet the recreational needs of children and adults with disabilities. This summer, more than 1,400 campers from counties throughout the state are registered to attend Camp Sunnyside. This marks Camp Sunnyside’s 45th year of operation. The camp is located at 401 NE 66th Avenue, on 80 wooded acres 15 minutes north of downtown Des Moines. The event is expected to conclude by 5:30 p.m.
