Business Record: D.M., Hubbell lay a plan to scrub former YMCA site from courthouse site list

The Des Moines City Council will vote Monday on a plan that could remove the site of the former Riverfront YMCA as the federal government’s prime location for a new courthouse.

Instead, Hubbell Realty Co. would have until May to fine-tune plans for what could be a mix of for-sale condominiums and a boutique hotel in one or two mid-rise towers.

Here’s the arrangement: The council will vote on a put agreement in which Hubbell would retain control of the site at 101 Locust St. until May 31. If the city and Hubbell cannot reach a development agreement by that date, the city will buy the site for $5.2 million, said Assistant City Manager Matt Anderson.
