West Des Moines, IA (September 19, 2013) – The construction and design of the cabins Hubbell Realty Company and their trade partners are building at Easter Seals Iowa’s Camp Sunnyside is focused around accessibility and ease of use for the clients and counselors. The ADA approved features in the 7,500+ square foot cabins will assist in the safety and independence for the campers who stay at Camp Sunnyside during summer camp and weekend respite camp.

The old cabins presented several accessibility barriers to many campers, including sinks that were too high for an individual who utilizes a wheelchair, lack of private space for individuals who require personal care and insufficient space between beds to maneuver ambulatory equipment. “Our staff has always done a great job with making do with what they had, but the new cabins will allow counselors to support clients in a much more safe and accessible environment,” said Camp Director Nicole Vos, who has managed a team of over 50 at Camp Sunnyside for the past two years. “The height of sinks and beds in the old cabins meant our staff needed to assist campers with tasks such as brushing teeth, washing hands and climbing into bed. The new cabins will allow campers to complete daily living activities on their own, providing them with greater independence and sense of accomplishment.”

“When our team was designing the cabins, we were acutely aware of the needs of the campers,” stated Bryan Shiffler, Manager of Shiffler Associates Architects, P.L.C., the architect of the project. “Our design goal was not to just meet the Americans with Disabilities Act, but to rethink how to make these cabins better suited for individuals with special needs.” Features of the cabins include 42 inch doorways, spacious hallways to accommodate turning radius and locker storage that is lower to the ground.

Most exciting for the Easter Seals Iowa staff and clients are the new shower rooms. The former shower facilities were not only dated and worn, but they were located in a detached building, meaning counselors and campers had to exit the cabins, braving the elements, to get cleaned up. The showers in the new cabins are spacious, fully accessible and offer much more privacy for service delivery.

Construction plans for today include installation of stone veneer, exterior painting and completion of the restrooms. Hubbell Realty Company and Easter Seals Iowa will thank Cabins for Campers 24/7 sponsors with a VIP party from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm featuring local country music artist, Jason Brown. Media personnel are also invited to attend.
