First constructed in 1913, the Hubbell Building served as the center for many corporate offices for central Iowa’s building industry, including Hubbell Realty Company. This local significance earned the Hubbell Building a designation on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2002, floors 2-10 stood vacant, with a single business occupying the first floor. Hubbell Realty Company chose to convert the former office spaces into affordable, trendy downtown residences and began construction in 2005. Tax credits were obtained through the Iowa Finance Authority.
