Hubbell Construction Services provided general contracting work for the renovation of Marc Stephens Salon, located along the Pappajohn Sculpture Park at 1440 Locust Street in the former Mitchell Transmission building. To maximize the views of the sculpture garden, the salon’s open layout enables clients to sit near the large glass windows, which also allow in a great deal of natural light. Because of the salon’s proximity to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, special considerations had to be given to the exhaust and venting so that ducts and piping were in accordance with National Park Services guidelines.
The Hubbell team created a mezzanine structure to house an office space for the salon as well as mechanicals. The salon also required the construction of a shampoo area. One of the most unique features of the space is the hexagonal ceramic tile that is original to the 96-year-old building. This was maintained through the renovation and now is exposed throughout much of the salon.
