Grinnell, IA (August 28, 2018) – Hubbell Realty Company’s apartment community, Spaulding Lofts, has been presented the Margaret Keyes award by the State Historical Society of Iowa Board of Trustees and the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Hubbell was honored at the Preservation Awards Ceremony in Waterloo on August 28. The Margaret Keyes Award recognizes the preservation of a large historic building by using State Historical Preservation and Cultural and Entertainment District Tax Credit Program incentives. Spaulding Lofts was a $12.5 million project to convert the Spaulding Automobile Manufacturing Company into 77 mixed-income apartments to meet the growing needs of the Grinnell community.

“It was a truly fun, transformative project for our team. Taking the 1870’s Spaulding Company building and converting it to urban-style lofts has been a journey. All of the original architectural features – big windows, exposed brick and more - give Spaulding Lofts character and warmth,” said Kris Saddoris, Vice President of Multifamily Development.  

“Congratulations to Hubbell Realty on receiving the prestigious Margaret Keyes Award in recognition of their repurposing a decaying manufacturing facility in Grinnell.  The result of their work gives Grinnell a now vibrant building with over 70 affordable loft style living units and additional amenities for residents.  This project has greatly enhanced our downtown area,” said Grinnell Mayor Dan Agnew.

The award is named after Margaret Keyes, a University of Iowa professor and nationally recognized figure in historic preservation. She led the restoration of Iowa’s original state capitol in Iowa City.
