Des Moines Register: Why downtown Des Moines' population exploded over the last decade

In the last decade the downtown core has seen a burst of growth, nearly doubling its population with the addition of 3,774 people — an 82% increase. Downtown accounted for more than a third (35%) of the city's total population growth in the last 10 years and more than half of its new housing units. 

Also adding to the area's housing stock are hundreds of units in the developing Market District, which, while not within the official census boundary, is considered part of downtown by city leaders. 

"We've definitely not hit the max of what we can do there," said Kris Saddoris, vice president of multifamily development for Hubbell Realty Co., one of the leading developers of downtown residential properties.
