DES MOINES, IA — Progress continues on ICON Water Trails and the Hubbell Trailhead, with major construction milestones now underway along the river corridor.
Work on the temporary bridge, critical for providing construction access to the south half of the river, has been completed, enabling crews to advance into the next phase of in-river improvements. Sheet pile installation is now underway, allowing construction teams to build key features within a controlled, de-watered environment.
These in-water elements will include improvements to mitigate the upstream Des Moines Water Works dam, a recreational whitewater drop, and a combined habitat and recreation passageway designed to enhance both environmental outcomes and outdoor access.
Above the riverbanks, park-like amenities and upland features are scheduled to begin construction in spring 2027, further activating the corridor as a destination for residents and visitors.
The full project, including the Hubbell Trailhead, is anticipated to open in spring 2028, creating a signature recreational asset that connects community, conservation, and economic development along the Des Moines riverfront.
