Hubbell & Easterseals Iowa Partnership Extends Beyond Extreme Build

Over the course of the last decade, Hubbell Realty Company has formed a close working relationship with Easterseals Iowa and the organization’s mission to help Iowans:

"Together, we can change the way the world defines and views disability by making profound, positive differences in people’s lives every day.”

Easterseals Iowa has been supporting individuals with disabilities and special needs for more than 90 years. Throughout Easterseals Iowa and Camp Sunnyside, opportunities abound for all aged Iowans to receive educational, supplemental, physical, and cognitive support alongside hands-on counselors and educators.

Easterseals Iowa serves more than 3,500 people annually and with that amount of need, came a greater need in their infrastructure.

After touring the grounds and meeting Easterseals Iowa staff in 2012, Hubbell announced that Easterseals Iowa would be the recipient of what would’ve been the third Hubbell Extreme Build to date – Cabins for Campers. The organization was in dire need of new overnight, summer cabins that would provide shelter and a home-away-from-home experience for campers with and without disabilities who would be attending summer programs.

By 2013, Hubbell had completed the third Hubbell Extreme Build at Easterseals by building two, 7,000 square feet cabins set with new restrooms, bunk houses, learning centers, outdoor space and a designated storm shelter. These cabins allowed campers to take advantage of Camp Sunnyside during the summer months – partaking in horseback riding, swimming, arts, and crafts. At the same time, it also means downtime for camper’s families and routine caretakers.

In addition to the Cabins for Campers, Hubbell has continued their partnership with Easterseals through associate fundraising and volunteering, the addition of an on-site respite house and finally, by announcing that the 2021 Hubbell Extreme Build would be returning to the site. This time, the Hubbell Extreme Build - Care for Kids build will build a brand-new child-development center for Iowans age six week up to Pre-Kindergarten ages.

This 13,000 square foot building will double Easterseals capacity from 60 to 120 kids that can be served on a daily basis. There will also be a new Variety – The Children’s Charity Club playground, more parking and additional opportunities for motor skill focuses within the center. The former development center will then be transformed for additional special respite cases.

This will come to life with the help of hundreds of Hubbell’s dedicated trade partners and the construction is currently underway! Hubbell will pause for summer programs to take place and then will begin the 24/7 around-the-clock build on September 10-17th, 2021.

While the drawings are solidified, Hubbell and Easterseals Iowa are currently asking for donated goods, in-kind donations and monetary donations from Central Iowans who would like to be involved. The COVID-19 pandemic was very difficult on Easterseals Iowa camp hours and capabilities as well as Hubbell’s projected material costs to construct the new center.
